Beginner's Guide to Activism

Activism can be visible in many different forms whether it's fighting for social, racial, environmental, political or economic rights. How can we be effective dealing with all these issues? It’s very important to take some notes and find the ways that work to bring the results we want.

Before you even go online, choose what you stand for. Be sure of the message you would like to get across because what goes online is not easily forgotten. Be clear with your message and don’t be vague. If you are up to date and take a stand for what you support, you can begin to build a notable reputation. Don’t forget to mention your sources in order to gain more credibility.

Identify your audience. How do they act? What do they support? How could they relate to you and your cause? Find the media they use and approach them. Talk to them, explain what you and your organization fight for, and don’t put any pressure on them. If they are interested, they will get back to you.

Activists are usually involved in several different actions which demands a lot of time and attention. As a result, time management is essential. Burnout is really common and is caused by the accumulation of daily stress people have to face. Being busy with so many different tasks and situations can make you feel stressed at a level that actually reduces your ability to be productive. Make a schedule and manage your daily tasks. It will help you get more done in the long run. If you feel overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to delegate the workload to fellow team members. This is easy to do in the WeAct Task Marketplace.

Using the right tools could save you some precious time. Typically, in order to communicate with fellow activists you might use many different applications to chat, manage tasks, schedule events, and organize your next action. On the other hand, to make things more simple, you could also download the WeAct app and integrate all these different tools in one!

Social media is where everything is happening. New trends, live broadcasts, and worldwide news all spreads in seconds. Join some groups, share ideas, and learn new ways to stay active. Digital activism is bringing real change across the globe and you can be part of it.

What would activism be without action? Don’t hesitate to share your thoughts with an already existing group. If a good idea comes to your mind about an issue that concerns you and other activists too, make it real! If everyone waits for other people to make the first move for change, nothing will ever happen. Chances are you will get more support than what you anticipated. Even though you can always create a new campaign, first check out the groups that are doing this work already.

Activist organizations—as with every kind of organization—need leadership. Important decisions must be made in these movements and without leadership this could be complicated and time consuming. People with experience and understanding can make great leaders by helping your organization reach its goals much faster. In addition, they can offer guidance to people completely new to activism and help them grow in their abilities. The Youth Activist Toolkit by Advocates for Youth and Level Forward categorizes group involvement into three categories: Leaders, Members, and Supporters. Check out their guide for more helpful tips.

Meet people who share the same vision as you. Join chats and forums. Combine your power and create something bigger together. Learn from others but teach as well. Knowledge is power and the world needs people to be informed on the issues that concern the planet at the moment. Current issues worldwide have to do with the environment, immigration, racial injustice, and so much more. Everyone deals with those issues in every country, every time of the day. We are all in this together, so we should act like it #WeActTogether!

Activism is not easy. It’s a way of life that people choose in order to make the world a better place to live. To create a strategy and prevent getting too tired or stressed, try out some of these suggestions that are new to you.
