Easy Ways to Improve Your Communication
Informing, persuading, and building relationships are the main objectives of communication. These three goals are also the starting point of activism. Therefore, if your message aims at influencing and motivating your audience, you need to communicate accordingly.
Would you like to know how to communicate your goals and expand your message? Then keep reading!
Eight practical steps
1. Have a clear goal
What exactly would you like to communicate? Your message will be more potent if it is focused on one part of the issue. If you have a specific cause you're addressing, your listeners will be more likely to understand, accept the message, and react as intended. Extinction Rebellion is a great example of using these strategies. They very clearly state their mission and the "why" behind their activism.

2. Get to know your audience
Identify their needs and motivations. What are their main concerns? What motivates them to join the cause? By knowing your audience you can become better at creating campaigns that resonate with people. Talk directly to them and build rapport. Always be open to having members join your organization and keep recruiting when you come across people who express interest. Unity is strength!
Asking probing, open ended questions will encourage brainstorming with the participants of the discussion. You can also ask for feedback to keep improving. This shows that you care about the other's ideas and opinions too. Remember to follow a facilitator's guide that suites your organization. Active listening is a must in any type of communication. However, it is even more vital if you intend to generate inclusive conversations. Besides, this attitude of openness and cooperation will inspire a sense of trust among your peers.
5. Be mindful of the channel
Adapt the content to the medium. For example, when public speaking (either face to face or through video) do not forget the basic rules of non-verbal communication. Your tone, posture, facial expression, gestures and body movement have a significant impact on the information you are delivering. Keeping eye contact with your audience is also essential since it creates a connection between the speaker and the listener.
6. Manage the rhythm
Don't start the conversation with the most extreme position. This is especially important if you want to encourage collaborative communication and move from debate to dialogue. Providing context will help people to understand what you are fighting for, and that's the reason why it will be the best way to start your speech. WeAct now makes it easier to communicate procedures, decisions, instructions, and policies through the Meetings function. Meetings eliminates ambiguity and promotes purposeful conversations by evolving brainstorm sessions into action focused discussions.
7. Be assertive
The range of different social movements is as broad as the variety of beliefs. Hence, not everyone has to agree with your vision of the problem. Expect resistance and be open to criticism. Apply assertive communication to express your ideas while maintaining respect for the rights and opinions of others.
8. Show them how you can be helpful
What can you do for the cause? Focus your own message on this instead of focusing on telling your audience to do. Showing commitment will make your message more convincing.
